Sunday Church School
September 20, 2009 - May 16, 2010

The 2009-2010 Sunday church school year will begin on Sunday, September 20, 8:30am.  Parents and children will join together to meet the teaching staff and renew acquaintances.

The theme for the 2009-2010 year is “Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path”.  (Psalm 119:105)

Throughout the year students will hear stories from both the Old and New Testaments.  Parents will be asked to help with the reading of these stories both in the opening and at home.  Teachers will help these stories come alive and share the good news of the Gospel in the department class rooms.

Special Family Sundays are being planned to encourage the whole family of God to join together to hear, share and work on projects that involve communion, the Bible and the Christmas message.

Sunday church school is open to all who are three years of age and older.

Immanuel’s Sunday Church School exists to aid parents in helping children with their faith formation.  It is indeed a team effort by Pastor, superintendent, teachers, parents and youth to grow in their understanding of their relationship with Christ and His Church.

First Communion

At Immanuel, first communion is offered to those youth in Grades 5 and up who have not yet received instruction in the meaning of this Sacrament.

Youth along with their parents are requested to meet with the Pastor to discuss the meaning and importance of the Eucharist.  After a period of preparation with both parents and youth, a date will be determined for those who desire to be regular participants in the Sacrament of Holy Communion.

A series of introduction to the meaning and importance of the Sacrament of the Altar will be offered in fall 2010.

Confirmation

Here at Immanuel confirmation ministry is the completion of a process whereby youth in Grades 8 or higher can affirm the faith of their baptism and become a confirmed member of Immanuel Lutheran Church .

During this process youth are to be regular participants in the Bible Buster class held on Sunday mornings between 8:30am and 9:30am.  In this class students explore different Bible stories and how these Bible story characters are similar to the faith struggles encountered by people today.

Also included during this process is the accumulation of attendance at 84 worship services either at Immanuel Lutheran Church or another church convenient to their location or time schedule along with 40 service hours 30 of which are at this church and 10 that can be accomplished through outside service programs.

Over a two-year period instruction in the meaning of the Apostles’ Creed, Ten Commandments, Lord’s Prayer, Church History and other religions along with a look at Lutheran worship will be offered under the auspices of the Pastor assisted by another confirmed member(s).

Youth may begin this process in the summer or fall and their date of affirming their faith will be determined by the completion of the process either on Pentecost Sunday or Reformation Sunday.  (These two dates may also be adjusted to meet the schedule of the church along with the student’s availability.)
